Tamlin (mother of Allanah and Jensen): Involving the kids in buying and preparing and choosing the food means that they are learning from the very, very beginning.
Eugene (father of Allanah and Jensen): Alright, what have we got here? We’ve got some yellow, some orange.
Jensen: Black.
Allanah: We’ve got some green.
Eugene: This is black. That’s an eggplant, green.
Allanah: We’ve got some red, yellow.
Eugene: We’ve got yellow. We’ve got green.
Tamlin: We’ve got all the colours. We’ve got all the colours of the rainbow.
Eugene: Okay. That means we’ve got some really healthy food here.
Tamlin: You get to do a bit of counting while you’re there.
Eugene: How many days does Lani go to school? She goes to school for five days during the week. So we need at least five for her.
Tamlin: You get to talk about colours.
Eugene: When they’re a little bit red, they’re a little bit more sweet.
Tamlin: So Lani counts out her apples and Jensen tells us which colour grapes he likes.
Eugene: How about these ones? These are the grapes that you were looking for. Did you want the really black ones?
Tamlin: Four, five. So that’s five and five is how many?
Allanah: Ten.
Tamlin: Altogether. Excellent work. Nice job. Okay, do you want to give the money to the lady? There you go Lani, we’ve got two different kinds in there.
Grocer: Okay. Here’s some change. Thank you. Three-forty and your bag. Thank you.
Tamlin: Thank you. Are you going to be able to carry that? Can you pop it in the trolley for me? Okay good job. Alright, what are we going to get next?
