Tamlin (mother of Allanah and Jensen): We usually go market shopping at least once or twice every month, so we just stock up when we go and buy a whole lot of food for the fridge.
Eugene (father of Allanah and Jensen): So what are we going to get today? Are we going to come back here and get some nice fruit?
Tamlin: Look, there’s some bananas over there. Do we need bananas today? What else do we need? Okay, let’s go have a look at the grapes up here because we got red ones last week and they were really yummy, weren’t they? Okay, Lana girl do you want to grab some apples now? Okay, we’re going to need a bag. Which apples do you want? There’s lots of different kinds, isn’t there? I think small ones are good for lunch boxes, aren’t they? Which ones are you going to have in your lunch box this week?
Eugene: When you get a chance to spend some time with your kids, it’s a good way to do it because you’re kind of multi-tasking really. You’re getting time with the kids as well as teaching them to eat right.
Tamlin: So you grab eight, actually I think even maybe ten because Jen’s been having them in his porridge at breakfast time, hasn’t he? Nice job. Okay, do you want to give the money to the lady. Thank you. Are you going to be able to carry that? Can you pop it in the trolley for me? Good job. Alright, what are we going to get next?
Tamlin: I think it’s very important for them to know where the food is coming from and it definitely helps them feel more interested in eating it.
Eugene: They’re beautiful, sweet mandarins, aren’t they? Where do mandarins grow?
Jensen: Trees and gardens.
Eugene: They grow in the trees and the gardens. Well done. Good boy.
Jensen: There’s a pomegranate.
Eugene: They’re only $2 each too. Do you know why? Because they are in season at the moment and when things are in season, there’s so many of them, but they’re so sweet, especially when you have them in salads. You can put them in other things as well. They’re nicer when they’re fresh, aren’t they? Have you got your list? How are we going?
Jensen: I haven’t crossed off anything yet.
Eugene: You haven’t crossed it off, that’s okay. We still need to get some herbs. Hey Jen-Jen, look. Look at these ones. What were these? Do you remember what they’re called? These are snake beans.
Jensen: Snake beans. Don’t they look scary?
Eugene: You want them to be healthy. It’s all about flavours as well though. You get to know their flavours and you get to know what you can cook for them, what you can prepare for them.
Tamlin: What do you think we should get?
Jensen: Nuts.
Tamlin: You want some nuts? Okay, we can probably get some nuts. Which ones are your favourite?
Jensen: I like that one and that one.
Tamlin: Do you remember what these ones are?
Jensen: Dried apricot?
Tamlin: You love those ones, don’t you? Hi, can we have one scoop of the pistachios, please?
Jensen: And one scoop of this.
Tamlin: You made a good choice getting nuts, didn’t you? They’re so healthy. Have some, here you go.
