Narrator (Catherine Sewell, play specialist): A good way to support play is to provide some materials but not necessarily ask them right at the beginning what they want to do with it. Sometimes just exploring the materials allows them to come up with an idea.
There’s 2 ways that children play, so sometimes they might have a really solid idea. They’ve got a picture that they want to build in their mind already.
And other times just by manipulating the materials and feeling how heavy they are and how they kind of balance, then after a period of time they start to go, ‘Oh actually this castle is emerging’ and then the imagination starts to kick in after that time. So, there’s sort of 2 approaches that can happen as children are playing.
