Story

When Twilight Sparkles (voiced by Tara Strong) has her magic crown stolen by a mysterious night-time visitor, she is forced to enter a magic mirror to get back the crown and return it to its place in the Crystal Empire.

On the other side of the magic mirror, Twilight Sparkles finds another world. She has also become a human, and the humans around her become familiar and comforting friends. But not all of the humans are friendly. When Twilight meets Sunset Shimmer (voiced by Rebecca Shoichet), Twilight realises that getting Sunset Shimmer to turn her evil thoughts into good will be the biggest challenge.

Themes

Magic; good versus evil; bullying

Violence

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls has some violence. For example:

  • When Sunset Shimmer puts a crown on her head, it makes her evil. She and her two friends are transformed into devilish creatures, with fangs, spiky fingers and tails. The weather becomes dark and stormy, and the creatures turn children into zombies.
  • Sunset Shimmer bullies many of the children at school. In one scene one of the children cowers in fear.

Sexual references

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls has some mild sexual references. For example, there is mild flirting between two characters. They blush and twirl their hair. One of them asks the other out on a date.

Ideas to discuss with your children

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls is an animated children’s story about the My Little Pony characters. The main story is about what happens when a pony intruder tries to use the ponies’ power to further her own selfish desires.

Although My Little Pony: Equestria Girls has a G rating, it has scenes involving scary characters and bullying. These scenes might scare or confuse children under six years and raise issues for children older than this. This is why we recommend parental guidance for children under eight years. Some children under four years might find the movie too scary.

The main message from this movie is that the power of good will win over the influence of evil.

Values in this movie that you could reinforce with your children include honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity and loyalty. Each of the ponies represents one of these values.

This movie could also give you the chance to talk with your children about real-life issues such as bullying and how to manage it.
