Story
The Muppet Show (2026) is a revival of the classic Muppet Show series, with the muppets coming together to produce their first show in a very long time.
The variety show features celebrity guest appearances by Sabrina Carpenter, Seth Rogen and Maya Rudolph; fun musical numbers by Miss Piggy (voiced by Eric Jacobson) and Sabrina Carpenter; a silly daredevil showcase; and comic sketches.
Kermit the Frog (voiced by Matt Vogel) is the frazzled director desperately trying to make sure the show runs smoothly. But as things go awry, Kermit must make hard decisions about which acts to cut, causing conflict between him, Miss Piggy and the rest of the muppets.
Themes
Teamwork; variety shows; comedy; theatre
Violence
The Muppet Show has slapstick violence throughout, with the muppets being tossed around, hitting each other and crashing into objects. There are no injuries shown, and it’s all played for laughs. For example:
- A muppet puts their head in a trumpet and confetti blows, knocking them off screen.
- A character smashes a bottle over another’s head on 2 separate occasions.
- Sabrina Carpenter chokes a muppet and then flings his body around in a circle by his neck before tossing him off screen.
- Miss Piggy berates other characters, and these scenes are followed by laugh tracks.
- Miss Piggy knocks down a door.
Sexual references
The Muppet Show has some sexual references. For example:
- The song ‘Manchild’ by Sabrina Carpenter has some sexual innuendoes.
- There are several sexual innuendoes throughout the movie. They’re often subtle enough for only an adult audience to pick up on.
- Kermit tells Sabrina Carpenter that there have been some kicks in the smooth running of the show. Sabrina Carpenter says, ‘Oh that’s all right, I love kinks!’
- A muppet kisses a woman on the hand and then raises his eyebrows suggestively.
Alcohol, drugs and other substances
The Muppet Show shows some use of substances. For example, muppets are shown with alcohol bottles and cans in a bar sequence. They take swigs of the drinks.
Nudity and sexual activity
There’s no nudity or sexual activity in The Muppet Show.
Product placement
The following products are displayed or used in The Muppet Show:
- Sabrina Carpenter is a special guest on the show, singing her song ‘Manchild’ and a cover of the song ‘Islands in the Stream’.
- There are several other celebrity guest appearances, including by Seth Rogen and Maya Rudolph.
- The Muppets itself is a well-known franchise.
Coarse language
The Muppet Show has some coarse language, including ‘jerk’, freaking’, ‘stupid’ and ‘Oh my God’.
Ideas to discuss with your children
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, The Muppet Show presents a fresh spin on the original Muppets series, which aired from 1975 to 1981. The funny characters, musical numbers and slapstick humour mean this update is well suited to families looking for something short, sweet and entertaining.
Because of its slapstick violence and sexual references, The Muppet Show is best suited to families with children aged over 8 years. We recommend parental guidance for children aged up to 11 years.
The Muppet Show is mainly focused on entertainment, but it also includes messages about how trust and teamwork can help when things go wrong.
Values in The Muppet Show that you could reinforce with your children include teamwork and compromise.
The Muppet Show could also give you the chance to talk with your children about real-life issues like the following:
- In the song ‘Manchild’, Sabrina Carpenter refers to someone as ‘slow’. You could discuss whether this kind of language is appropriate or kind.
- Miss Piggy is very rude and doesn’t want to share the spotlight. What do you think of this behaviour? What do you think Miss Piggy could do differently?
- Many of the characters in the show are mean or rude to each other without apologising or taking responsibility for their actions. You could talk about what might happen if you behave this way in real life.
