Guides to help you manage your money

These guides can help you manage your money day to day and also plan for the future:

  • Moneysmart – Publications
  • Services Australia – Manage your money

Moneysmart provides free money calculators, tips and guidance. It’s part of an Australian Government strategy to help all Australians take control of their finances.

Budget planners

These budgeting and savings tools are free and easy to use, and your personal details are always secure:

  • Moneysmart – Budget planner
  • Moneysmart – Simple money manager
  • Australian Government Department of Human Services – Child support estimator

Many financial institutions have their own apps, resources and guides to help you with budgeting and managing your money. It’s worth taking a look at your institution’s website to find out what it offers.

Financial advisers

Financial advisers help you set up savings goals and plan your future finances. A good financial adviser takes your family’s unique circumstances into account to help you achieve your financial goals.

A financial adviser can help you with:

  • everyday money management
  • investments
  • insurance
  • superannuation
  • planning for retirement.

You’ll need to pay to see a financial adviser. The benefits of financial advice often end up outweighing the cost.

Moneysmart's guide to choosing a financial adviser can help you get started.

Financial counsellors

Financial counsellors help you when you have financial difficulties. They can:

  • work with you to create a manageable budget
  • explain options for dealing with outstanding bills
  • negotiate with debtors
  • refer you to other services you might need.

You can speak to a financial counsellor by calling the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. You can also look for a financial counsellor in your area using the National Debt Helpline’s Find a financial counsellor map.

Financial counsellors are always free.

These services can get you started:

  • Moneysmart – Financial counselling
  • Commonwealth Financial Counselling.
