When your baby won’t wake up

If your baby doesn’t wake up from your touch and voice – act fast and keep calm. Emergency!

Get away from danger with your baby.

Call 000 for an ambulance. The 000 operator will tell you what to do. The operator will stay on the line.

Start checks on your baby while waiting for the ambulance. Look in your baby’s mouth and remove any blockage that you can see.

If your baby is breathing

How to check if your baby is breathing
Look for chest and tummy movements, and listen or feel for breathing.

If your baby is breathing
Place your baby in the recovery position on their side with their head tilted down. Check them regularly for breathing and responses until the ambulance arrives.

Stay with your baby until medical help arrives. Stay calm.

If your baby is not breathing

If your baby is not breathing
Place your baby on a firm surface on their back, face up. Put 2 fingertips in the centre of your baby’s chest, between their nipples. Give 30 firm chest pushes. Do 2 pushes per second.

Fill your cheeks with air. Put your lips around your baby’s mouth and nose. Do a gentle and steady air puff for one second until your baby’s chest rises. Do this again.

If your baby is still not breathing
Keep doing 30 firm chest pushes and 2 gentle air puffs until your baby starts breathing or medical help arrives. Keep checking to see if your baby is breathing.
