Shopkins World Vacation begins when Apple Blossom (voiced by Kate Murphy, as are all characters) wins an international vacation for herself and all of her friends, including Buncho Bananas. The shopkins find themselves in London where Kooky Cookie winds up in the middle of a royal jewel heist. Krispy Cookie and Crunchy Cookie are the masked bandits who will stop at nothing to grab the crown jewel and keep it for themselves. Kooky unwittingly offers to help them. Before Krispy and Crunchy can come back for the jewel, Kooky is whisked off to Paris to become the muse of famous fashion designer Macy Macaroon. While her friends follow her trail and the world is caught up in Cookie fashion fever, Kooky leaves for New York Fashion week. She’s later sent to Japan, where her friends must demonstrate their loyalty to win her back, save the jewel and expose the bandits for who they are.

Here we outline any topics, issues and ideas in this movie that might upset children and adolescents, so that you can gauge whether it is appropriate for your child. For example, children and adolescents may react adversely to themes of crime, suicide, drug and alcohol dependence, death, serious illness, family breakdown, separation from a parent, animal cruelty or distress, children as victims, natural disasters and racism.

Consumerism; fashion trends

Here we identify any violence in this movie, and explain how and why it might impact on your child or adolescent. In general, movie violence can make children less sensitive to the use of violence in real life. Alternatively, they may become fearful about the prevalence and likelihood of violence in their own world. In some contexts, it can also teach them to see violence as an acceptable means of conflict resolution.

Shopkins World Vacation has some violence. For example:

  • Buncho Bananas smashes his face into a window as he’s repeatedly thrown into the air to check the occupants of a room.
  • Buncho kicks Apple in the back during a cab ride.
  • Krispy Cookie punches Crunchy Cookie.

Ideas to discuss with your children

Shopkins World Vacation is an animated adventure aimed at young children. It’s suitable for children under eight years but lacks interest for children older than this.

The main messages from this movie are about friendship and how good people all over the world are willing to help and care for others if you give them a chance.

This movie could also give you the chance to talk with your children about real-life issues like:

  • not going off with someone you don’t know: Kooky goes off with Macy Macaroon although she doesn’t know Macy. Kooky doesn’t tell her friends where she’s going or how to find her
  • trying to find self-fulfilment by following the newest trends and fashion styles: this is less likely to lead to lasting happiness than to a cycle of consumerism and debt.
