Story
The Incredibles is about a traditional comic-book superhero called Mr Incredible, who leads a perfect life rescuing innocent people and helping others in need. But one day several simple, crime-fighting mishaps result in the government banning the use of superhuman powers. All superheroes are forced to enter a relocation program, where they are given new identities and helped to ‘fit in’.
Mr Incredible marries his superhero love, Elastigirl, and lives a quiet life for the next 15 years. They have three children, all with superhuman powers: their son Dash can outrun the wind; their shy daughter Violet can create force fields and become invisible; and their baby son Jack-Jack appears ‘normal’, but has a few surprises in store for everyone. But Mr Incredible has become completely disenchanted with his life as an insurance claims processor and is becoming distant from his family. Things seem to be getting worse until Mr Incredible gets an offer too good to refuse and finds himself returning to the life he once loved.
Unfortunately, he learns that it’s a trap set by the evil supervillain Syndrome to rid the world of superheroes once and for all. Mr Incredible and his family must use the gifts they’ve tried to hide to restore peace and save humanity.
Violence
The Incredibles has frequent violence. For example:
- There are frequent shoot-outs in which characters use handguns, machineguns and other high-tech weapons. Often the victims are members of the Incredible family, including the children.
- There are numerous car smashes, train derailments and aircraft explosions. Many vehicles are blown up, destroyed or in some other way damaged beyond repair.
- Bombs detonate throughout.
- Mr Incredible loses his temper and blasts his boss through several walls. The boss slams into a far corridor and is later seen in hospital wearing a full body cast.
- There several fight scenes that involve punching, kicking, hitting, bashing and so on.
- There is a violent probe programmed to kill superheroes and anyone else who gets in its way. It attacks Mr Incredible and his family several times.
- Syndrome repeatedly uses a blasting energy field to immobilise his victims.
- Objects that look like large cannon balls hit Mr Incredible numerous times.
- When Mr Incredible refuses to give information to Syndrome, he’s strapped to a high-tech device and tortured with electric currents.
- Syndrome violently abducts baby Jack-Jack before the child takes matters into his own hands.
Sexual references
The Incredibles has some sexual references. For example:
- Mr and Mrs Incredible slap and pinch each other’s bottoms.
- There is a subplot running that leads Elastigirl to believe that Mr Incredible is having an affair. This will probably go over the heads of most children.

Ideas to discuss with your children
The main message of The Incredibles is that everyone has special gifts and talents. Rather than hiding these gifts and trying to fit in and be like everyone else, you should be true to yourselves and be happy with who you are.
This movie could give you the chance to talk with your children about power, courage, obedience, justice and what it means to be ‘normal’.
