| Sadly I've had to supplement a non existent milk supply for my 3 week early, 10 day old who has only just started to gain weight. She strains a lot when trying to poo, possibly this is very normal new born behaviour but I'm wondering if anyone recommends any brand of formula over another to not exacerbate constipation? Also she is too little to peddle her tiny kicking legs, any other soothing techniques to help bowel movements along. Thank you so much - New mum....

Stay away from all Gold products, the basic ones are much easier to digest. My daughter had quite a bad bowel issue until she was about 18 months old, we used the Heinz range and her problems eased.

| Thank you for your replies. My hospital was using Gold S26 and that is what I had been using since... I will switch formulas after talking to the maternal health nurse - from what I've read switching isn't great, but do babies really notice?

S26 = constipation!!
When I switched from breast to formula (S26) my bub got constipated. Didn't poo for 3 days, screamed and cried while passing stools, and the poo was hard. At first I gave extra cooled boiled water and sugar water (1 teaspoon brown sugar in 60mls water twice a day), as recommended by child family health nurse. This eased the constipation. We also switched formula to NAN Ha [stands for Hypoallergenic]. This is what my hospital used and was also recommended by my child and family health nurse. NAN Ha is partly broken down so it is easier to digest than other formulas. It is the closest you can get to breast milk in a formula! It also has probiotics which aid digestion.

| Hi may I ask you a question??? Do you have allergies in your family??? If so I reccommend you try a HA formula. It is advisable to inform your health nurse or doctor of this problem also as it can become dangerous in a new born and may cause haemorids or hernia's. Because your child is premature see a doctor as soon as you can for further advice. If the doctor agrees you can add some brown sugar to about 10ml of cool boiled water to help get things running better. Only use about a tenth of a teasoon, a very small pinch of the sugar and make sure it is brown not raw sugar. Good luck.

Hi there,
Don't know if this is of use to you but constipation is a common characteristic of babies who reflux and have feeding difficulties. This is often exacerbated by many reflux bubs also having Cows Milk Protein Intolerance (CMPI) or soy protein intolerance which can contribute both to the constipation and wind issues. It may be advisable to talk ot your doctor about getting of a cows milk based formula altogether. Reflux is not just a vomiting baby problem (many have silent reflux). Reflux is a motility disorder of the entire gastro-oesophageal system. There is a good article on this site about infant reflux. Have a look and see if it applies to you. Other useful info is available at www.reflux.org.au
PM me if this is relevant or useful to you. Hope your bub is settling.

My bubs is 8 weeks old and she has had the same problem. There is a formula thats called Novalac, they have a formula and specifies to your babies problem ie consitpation, colic, allergies, reflux and sleeping. I have had my baby on the constipation one for 2.5 weeks now and she is much better. You can only get this formula at the chemist and some chemists don't stock it. I know Pharmore does Good Luck

At 4 weeks old my son also experienced constipation, and we were using the Nan HA Gold formula and at that stage 180mls of breast milk per day which has a natural laxative in it so that should of helped.
I discussed this with my health nurse who said that between 4 and 6 weeks is a crucial development period for the gut and a high number of babies experience constipation during this time. The issue usually goes away by itself - but as several people make the decision to change formula, they think it's their choice to change which fixes it, when infact the child would have returned to normal anyway.
I had also been told that Gold was prone to constipation and that I should change but I stuck with it and my son is fine. (He's 7 weeks now).
You can try strategies such as a warm bath, doing the bicycle action with his legs to help him get some action down there and the water option is good too, although I was only allowed to give my son 30mls per day because of his weight (he was a small baby) with half a teaspoon of brown sugar.
As parents we naturally think that we have to do something to 'fix' any problem our child has, but don't forget their bodies are still optimizing.
(Please note: I'm not stating that babies don't get constipation due to formula issues. I'm just posting based on my own personal experience and advice from my health nurse).
