Setting and enforcing limits I think is the key. Having grown up as an avid enjoyer of computer games, I can't think of them as inherently evil. Even as an adult, I've found that, on occasion, playing some games can help me deal with stress, spark my imagination and creativity, and even help me get in touch with my inner child again.
However, it is obvious with my own daughter that, if left to her own 'devices', she could spend all evening in front of screen. It's up to her mother and me to monitor this, enforce limits, and also suggest and provide suitable alternative activities to balance out the screen time.
Memorizing math facts is boring. Horse races are exciting!
