My 5 year old with pddnos has tended to go under the radar so we have had alot of people almost in disbelief. I dont get offended, I guess its made me realise how I hard I have worked to prepare and scaffold and structure his life andinteractions. The worst thing that was said was by my social worker cousin last December when we got our diagnosis 'i picked it when he was 2' !! I already feel like we almost missed the boat with early intervention, thanks cuz!!

people and their comments would just drive you nuts. I informed the leader in DD's sunday school that she was DX with ASD and that we will be keeping her in the 2yo group cause I feel she fits there better than the 3yo group. At the end of the session the leader came to me and told me to disregard the diagnosis, that the Peads are wrong and she doesn't have ASD. WTF????

One that I get a fair bit is "its great that you ALLOW DS6 to be so individual and wear the stuff he does and be so quirky" My DS has strong sensory issues regarding clothing(,he wears alot of velvet pants that get made up from fabric that he has chosen from spotlight and very silky type t-shirts, usually Mr Men, he is very out there physically, but has a very quiet demeanor)weird eating habits, long curly hair etc.....My response was that if I didn't "allow" these things that I would be denying/removing part of his personality as the ASD and his personality were very closely intertwined and to stop some element of his behaviour would be like trying to change/squash his personality. Sure we try to mould some stuff to be a bit more "normal" but who in their right mind would try and change everything about their child. I'm not embarrassed by my son, I love that he is "quirky"

There are a few that get to me the classic
" god only gives special needs children to people that can handle them" I mean wtf is the go with that, and if so, explain all those families that can't handle it
We had to take DD (profoundly autistic, intellectually impaired etc etc) to a gp, her normal one wasn't around (holidays) so had to see another one at the same practice, after explaining why we were there (just under the weather type stuff) he says "but what's wrong with her?" we explain the asd etc (in her file anyway fgs) and then he comes out with "how disappointing" sorry but that is such a what the heck type comment and from a doctor!
When visiting her paed (now ex as I am sure you will understand in a moment) we said that the current medications etc weren't helping and what else could we try, his suggestion was "give her to children's services" ah What the F@@@, not the type of suggestion I was expecting, never went back, thank goodness we have moved and now have a free paed through public health, who cares, is helpful, rings on a weekend, because he didn't manage to finish her whole review in the 2 days he initially said (lots of problems with medications etc). Is supportive, listens to us and when we need something, such as letters for school etc, he has them done and sent the same day as I have asked for it, even helps with things that we haven't identified as immediate concerns, (such as offering to arrange free genetic testing -we have two kids on the spectrum and 2 NT kids, offering to arrange for DD to have dental work done for free under General anesthetic at the hospital - really overdue but won't happen without her being out of it) offers to arrange respite for us, tells me what a wonderful job we are doing and how much we are doing right and how much better the kids are doing (general health wise) than what doctors would expect given their issues (trying to balance food intake and diet in a child who has serious food obsessions and on medication that gives an unlimited appetite etc)
Best wishes

OMG ruthjones that kind of comment is in my opinion reportable to the medical licencing authority- what a pig to say that. The paed, not the GP, though the GP comment was bad enough! So glad to hear your new paed is so good though
