We run weekly support groups in 4 locations around Melbourne, as well as a volunteer staffed phone support service. We also run lectures and workshops for both sufferers and professionals to inform and raise awareness of anxiety related issues.

The goal of our Parenting Support Strategies Program is to provide clear and concise information on real, practical strategies parents can implement to help their children with anxiety. We also seek to provide support and resources for the parents themselves.

The program was devised after ADAVIC received a growing number of calls over the last 12 months from parents who have a child diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Our volunteers failed to find many relevant resources, so the decision was made to draw on our networks and expertise to create a support system for these parents. We are not setting ourselves up as experts in the area of child and adolescent anxiety and depression; we are simply attempting to provide support and information to those in our community who are affected.

To this end we are running a series of lectures throughout the year on topics surrounding child and adolescent anxiety and depression – the next lecture will be on the efficacy of Stillness Meditation to combat anxiety in school aged children. The lecture after that is by Dr Nick Allen on adolescent depression and the biochemical changes which can trigger it.

We also run a fortnightly support group in Kew, on a Wednesday evening. The group runs from 7:30pm - 9:00pm and costs $5 for on members and $3 for ADAVIC members. Our goal is to provide ongoing support and information so that parents can be equipped to assist their children in their anxiety and depression. We wish to encourage the sharing of struggles, ideas, and techniques by providing a support group network which parents can rely on so that they do not feel alone or isolated.

This will be linked by information and education resources (information kit) as well as access to health professionals who specialize in child and adolescent anxiety and depression (through ADAVIC’s referral setup).

We welcome all attendees, bookings are not necessary.
