| My baby is 4.5 months old and we have been giving him solids for a month now on and off. In the last week and a half he has been having breakfast and dinner composed of 3 tablespoons of mainly veg or fruits. His breastfeeding routine has not changed. Has anyone fed their bubs early like this and suffered ill effects? He seems fine to me but others seem suprised that he is already onto solids. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say. Cheers MJ

My eldest I started a bit before 5 months as I couldn't keep the milk up to him and his weight gain had slowed dramatically on his growth chart. The other two I left till 6 months (#3 started last weekend) partly as they weren't showing signs of readiness and partly because they both had issues with intolerances to certain foods.
I haven't noticed any difference in the child I started before 5 months and the ones that started later.
The (useless) paediatrician I saw with DD said there was no reason babies couldn't start eating solids at 3 weeks if the food was made runny enough...I didn't take any notice of him.
Personally I take the "you must start at 6 months" with a grain of salt. If you as his mother think he's ready then he's ready
I'm always careful with allergenic foods (dairy, wheat, eggs) and am going to have to take particular care with #3 as he is sensitive to salicylates in my milk so who knows how he's going to go with it in solids. I think that the risk of introducing allergenic foods early and/or overfeeding is why "they" tell you to wait till 6 months.
Remember...they're all different and there is no "right" way

I also started solids with my two kids from 4 months. They both enjoyed very much. I was also being cautious about what to offer them. One of the downsides for me is they both self-weaned breastmilk at a fairly early age(around 7 months old). Because they never tasted formular before and couldn't get used to the fishy smell/taste, it took me a long time to figure out what to feed them with a balanced diet in mind, particularly milk intake. In hindsight, I wish I had waited until 6 months mark and maybe they would have kept breast feeding a bit longer. I got pretty sad about their weaning off and felt I was not needed any more. A bit sentimental, I know.
