Hi there

I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to get to sleep during the day. My son is 3 weeks old and everyone says that "I should sleep when he sleeps". Problem is, I just can;t seem to do this - I've tried everything from counting sheep to meditation to warm milk, I just can't seem to switch my mind off....even though I am dog tired.

My husband finds it easy to fall asleep on cue, but he has worked in hospitality shift work for twenty odd years, and I think this has helped him be able to sleep, however I have alwaysbeen a "9 - 5" girl and sleep during the day really eludes me.

Does anyone have any tips or hints - I'd love to be able to get some shut eye and catch up on some sleep as it is starting to wear me down a little.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Have you tried having a warm to hot bath with lavender and/or chamomile oil? Maybe try it instead of a sleep first help until you can relax your mind. Sometimes the relaxing is just as helpfull

Hi there,

I sometimes find it hard to sleep during the day too, as I never used to be a day napper before I had kids.

But even if you can't sleep and you just lie down on the couch and watch some TV, listen to music or read a book you might nod off without even trying, and if you don't, at least you're putting your feet up for a while. At least try to have some time during the day where you don't do anything as it can really wear you down over time.

All the best,

Shontelle

Welcome to motherhood!  Prior to having kids I could sleep anywhere and anyhow. Now I constantly have one eye open.  You may find, this being your first that you still may be a little anxious and alert for when baby wakes.

You should know your baby sleep routines by now, for example sleeps between 9-12, feed, awake for 30 minutes and then asleep again.  Choose which one you feel the most tired and then go and snuggle up in bed.  Put baby in their cot or basket near you so they're not far.

Forget the housework too and develop a day of the week that you do it.  I found I was too crazy about having a clean house and such to try and get my rest.  And take the phone off the hook!

i totally agree with leaving the housework until one day of the week but struggle with this concept. i honestly thought that i would be able to manage looking after the children, husband and house work while being off on mat leave but i do believe that doing the above is harder than going to work full time! people too have told me don't worry about the housework get your rest but i wanted to be able to do it all however found my self getting ragged. when i do try and catch up on lost sleep i too find it difficult because in the back of my mind i am wondering how much longer will it be until dd wakes and find myself listening to every noise worried that i may not hear her though i have an intercom and this is my third child. i agree that getting rest even if not sleeping is better than getting no rest at all. even if i end up watching tv i still feel that i have had some me time and yes do take the phone of the hook as it amazes me how many people ring just when i am starting to doze off!!! drives me mad

Well sleeping at day is normal, superstitions tell that sleeping at day may get the chance of increasing a child's height when he/she gets older.
