Professor Jennifer Bowes is the founder and Director of the Children and Families Research Centre, Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University, a university research centre. She has a research background in educational and developmental psychology and has over 20 years' experience in university teaching at Murdoch, Sydney and Macquarie universities in the area of child development, families and education. At Macquarie University, her teaching and research have been in the areas of child development, parenting and the interconnections among children, families and communities with a focus on the early childhood years.

Professor Bowes has an extensive research record in the area of child development and families. She has been the team leader of the Child Care Choices research project, a seven-year longitudinal investigation of the effects of multiple and changeable child care in the first three years of life on the development of young children.

She also leads a related research project on the child care choices of Indigenous families in NSW. Her book, Children, Families and Communities: Contexts and Consequences  was published in its third edition in 2009 and the 4th edition will be published in 2012. It is used as a text in 22 Australian universities and internationally.
