Psychologist Warren Cann talks with 3RRR radio host Jacinta Parsons
about positive parenting.
Parents are doing a better job than ever, but also face increasing criticism from the media, other parents, and even strangers in the supermarket. Parents are also quick to criticise themselves if they feel they are not measuring up to the latest parenting philosophy.
While many parents want to be more confident, Warren points out that a more natural state of parenting is to be a little unsure, to sometimes make mistakes, and gain confidence when things work out. Warren discusses the importance of positive feedback and where parents might find sources of encouragement. He talks about developing self-efficacy and dealing with negative self-criticism.
