Pharmacists are experts in medicines and their uses. Pharmacists look after, prepare and dispense medicines, and give information about dosage, side effects, interactions and other factors that ensure safe and effective use.

They also give advice about ways to stay in good health and can recommend treatments for minor ailments.

In Australia, pharmacists have university degrees in pharmacy, which includes the study of:

  • medicinal chemistry
  • the effects of medicines on the body and diseases
  • proper use of medicines
  • safety and risk management
  • health promotion and disease prevention
  • epidemiology
  • legal and ethical issues relating to pharmacy.
