Parenting in public (PDF 156kb)

Psychologist Warren Cann talks with 3RRR radio host Jacinta Parsons about taking children to public places and being judged as a parent by other people.

When a child is being noisy or badly behaved in a public place like a cafe or shopping centre, people often judge the parents and expect them to make the child be quiet. Warren and Jacinta discuss the issue and take calls from the public. Warren says we need to remember that tantrums are a normal part of being a toddler and sometimes the best approach for a parent is to ignore bad behaviour. When going out with your child it can help to have a plan in case things go wrong. If your child is tired or in a bad mood, it might not be the best time for visiting some places.
