A paediatrician is a doctor who specialises in the medical care of babies, children and adolescents.
Paediatricians know about the diseases and illnesses that affect babies and children. They are also experts in how babies, children and teenagers grow and develop. They have a broad perspective on children's health, welfare and education throughout the developing years.
Paediatricians complete at least six years of extra training after they finish their medical degrees. This training may include training in a sub-specialty such as a neonatology (treatment of newborns), paediatric cardiology or paediatric rehabilitation.
