A neurologist is a medical doctor with specialist training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disorders of the nervous system, including diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Paediatric neurologists are paediatricians with specialist training in neurology who treat neurological problems in children.
A neurologist may be involved in the treatment of epilepsy, stroke, cerebral palsy, neural tube defects, muscular dystrophy, autism spectrum disorder, movement disorders, acquired brain injury, and speech, language and memory problems.
Diagnostic tests such as an electroencephalogram (EEG) or MRI are often required. These tests can help the neurologist find out more about a child’s condition.
