Professor Karen Simmer is the Winthrop Professor of Newborn Medicine, and Co-Director of the Centre for Neonatal Research and Education and the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence at the University of Western Australia. Karen is also Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at the King Edward Memorial and Princess Margaret Hospitals and of the Human Milk Bank in Western Australia.

Karen is currently leading research in neonatal infection, ventilation, necrotising enterocolitis, nutrition, lactation and multicentre randomised clinical trials.

Karen has qualifications from the Universities of Sydney, London and Harvard and fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and Australian Institute of Company Directors.
