Families – Building relationships is a video demonstrating three parenting skills that can help you build better relationships with your children.

The three parenting skills explained on the video are:

  • attending:‘tuning in’ to your child by making eye contact and using open body language
  • active listening: when you listen to your child and repeat back, in your own words, what you think your child has said
  • descriptive praise: telling your child exactly what pleased you about your child’s behaviour.
The video has been edited into small segments of less than three minutes, which are ideal for viewing online. It will open in a pop-up window, so make sure you click ‘Pop-ups okay’ if you’re using pop-up blocking software.
