'Families': a parenting skills video

Families was developed by the NSW Department of Community Services.
 

Families – Building relationships: parenting preschoolers is a video demonstrating three parenting skills that can help you build better relationships with your children.

The three parenting skills explained on the video are:

  • attending:‘tuning in’ to your child by making eye contact and using open body language
  • active listening: when you listen to your child and repeat back, in your own words, what you think they’ve said
  • descriptive praise: telling your child exactly what they did that pleased you.

The video has been edited into small segments of less than three minutes which are ideal for viewing online.
