Special education teachers have been trained to support students with disabilities, learning difficulties and behaviour disorders. They usually have a background in teaching followed by extra training in special education at university level.
They are experts in all areas of special education and disability, including learning, behaviour, sensory and intellectual disability and multiple disabilities. They are often involved in early childhood intervention programs.
Special education teachers work directly with students who have special needs and with other classroom teachers to plan and implement learning programs. They work with children from preschool to year 12, who are enrolled in primary, secondary and special schools. Special education teachers can be support teachers, classroom teachers, itinerant teachers or outreach teachers.
Special education teachers support the learning of students both with and without a confirmed disability. As well as their work in early childhood intervention programs they support students who are at risk of developmental delay.
