Case manager

By Raising Children Network

Case managers help to identify the needs of a child with a disability. A good case manager will ensure that the family is involved in planning and management of the child’s care. The role of a case manager is particularly helpful when the families of children with disabilities are dealing with a range of professionals and services. A major role is to ensure clear communication between all parties involved, and to support the family, particularly when they need to identify goals.

Case managers come from many different professional backgrounds and may be psychologists, social workers or have a degree in Disability Studies.

Note, in early childhood care, a family may work with a Family Services Coordinator. This role is similar to a case manager, with a focus on partnership with families and based on principles of family centred practice.
